Finally, I managed to capture the beauty of Stonegrave Minster from a parking space perfectly placed for a wonderful view across the Minster and capturing also the glory of the Yorkshire countryside.
Two in one! Result!
Stonegrave Minster was established before 757 AD, which makes it extremely old and in amazing condition!
Pope Paul the 1st sent a letter to the Eadbernt King of Northumberland about an appointment of an abbot or abbess.
That was a very long time ago and I would guess this letter was delivered on horse back with a seal of wax and quite possibly not a stamp and the postman!
Can you imaging having letters delivered by postmen on horses.....certainly different from a red van!
Slightly more exciting, only a little ;)
Actually I would quite like it, if at some point a chivalrous knight turned up with my water bill, it would be worth the pain of opening yet another demand for money or the latest circular from DFS, Ahem (other furniture shops are available;)
So back to the history bit....The minster has traditions which followed Iona and Lindisfarne, thats not a hippy type band from the dinosaur age that sang about the fog on the Tyne by the way, but a beautiful island in Northumberland.
Which I am desperate to visit once Covid has left the room!
The Minster was most likely founded by an earlier king of Northumberland!
The abbess or abbot ruled Coxwold, which is another village with a beautiful church, Stonegrave as in the picture guys, and a third house called Donamuthe! near where the old Don met the Trent and Humber at Adlingfleet. River and Estuary type places ;)
Sadly, this was destroyed by the Danes in 794 AD and has totally disappeared!
We have to use our imagination sometimes to wonder what buildings did look like in history, who lived there and what events took place there but this is good fun sometimes, however we are so fortunate to have so many wonderful ruins and reminders of our past...I wonder sometimes just how many lie still undiscovered and waiting for the light again?
History is totally amazing and really not boring.....my kind of subject!
I wish you love guys and a peaceful Sunday xx
